I plant cantaloupe at one per square or 4 plants to a 4 X 4-ft. bed.
I have trellised watermelons up to 24 lbs. on hurricane (aka chainlink)
fencing with pantyhose.  Some of my SQ FT beds are only 3 feet wide
and back up to the hurricane fence.  It's very handy for all vertical
crops and very sturdy.  It will take any weight--it's built to endure
130 m.p.h winds!!!!  Hope this adds some perspective.
