Dot, did you plant determinate or indeterminate varieties. The determinate ones will stop growing at a certain point in their life and that will be it. Topping them off may not encourage more sidegrowth. On indeterminate varieties, rthey just growing until the frost gets them. Topping might work there but the side shoots will get long also. Are you controlling the spread with a cage or trellis or just letting them fall? Last year's crop here in AZ (not sqft) grew 20 feet high (like the greenhouse hydrophonic type) but sprawled. I planted them in September 1995 and let the freeeze just before Christmas 1996 take them out. Use can let them sprawl if you use hay as a mulch so they aren't directly on the ground but may lose some to turtles and other creatures.
