Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Brian:
Sometimes I forget that people all over the world, including myself, are talking together on these listservs and the Internet. I must apologize and explain.
First, "cool" does not refer to the climate or temperature. Agreed, Scotland and Northwest Siberia are much cooler than the Isle of Jersey. Cool is an American colloquialism that means wonderful or awesome. For me, it means that whatever I am describing made such a great impression on me that I will not forget it for quite a while.
Second, is there another Isle of Jersey in the Canary Islands? This potato segment of the "Victory Garden" was filmed in the Isle of Jersey that is located in the English Channel, just south of the Isle of Guernsey and north of France.
Third, I should have explained that the most impressive ideas that were expressed in the Victory Garden video segment were that:
1. The farmers on the Isle of Jersey are constantly striving to corner the "early potato market" in their area and in the British and French restaurant market.
2. The farmers use ther own seed potatoes. These seed potatoes are stored in special storage basement type buildings that looked quite old. They have very unique (to me) methods of storage in wooden crates with handles that look like open wooden tool boxes.
3. Several methodologies for growing the new potatoes were shown...involving both high and low technology.
4. Europe does not depend on these farmers for their seed potatoes.
Just two reminders:
1. Potatoes are native to the American continents.
2. Automobile tires slough off a vast quantity of various chemicals that may cause mutations, cancer, and other long-term health problems for humans.
Thanks for sharing the very interesting information about potatoes in Scotland. I am glad you plant whole...it helps prevent fungus and loss of the species.
Have a great day,
Sheryl A. McCoy

By the way, most of Britain's, if not most of Europe's seed potatoes are grown in Ayrshire on the West coast of Scotland.

Regarding container potatoes - this is the same question as sqare foot gardening. Kennebreck are large potatoes and are crowded in too close at one per square foot - however much you pile mulch on them. On the other hand, Lineketas Delikatas are small and can be sown at one per square foot no problem.

This year I am only growning seven varieties of potaoes. The smaller ones - Edzell Blues, Arran Victory and Belle de Fontenay are all suitable for small barrel or stacked car tyre planting - just keep
vertically piling on car tyres (or one per sq ft in the ground). The bigger potatoes like Kennebreck require bigger - 55 gal drum size barrrels (or a square about 15 - 18'' each).

------------
This past Saturday, I watched Victory Garden on PBS. Recently, they have added a cool section to their show. Special guests take short video trips to places around the world to focus on some type of gardening.
