RE: Plea for my mailbox + other things

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Whereas I wish there were more. Each on -one- clearly marked subject.

I would rather have 200 posts which were accurately listed by subject (so I
could filter the ones I won't read anyway) than 5 that mix up the subjects I
want to read with a lot of stuff that will never apply to my garden. For
instance, I don't know what Elizabeth wrote after the word "Meanwhile". It
may be something I want to know, but since I have about 600 emails to go
through, I doubt that I will be able to read it today.

I filter heavily then read with my delete key. I have about 200 a day that
come from technical lists where I am unable to understand most of the
traffic (like "Undocumented frequency shifts when using Hilbert transforms
in Linux C-Sound"). When I see that a subject has gone over my head, I mark
it for filtering. There are several subjects I don't read on my favorite
list (which generates about 300 a day) starting with any subject which has
the word "seminar" in it. I will never be able to go to any Aikido seminar
in Japan, so I don't even want to see the posting. So the word "seminar" is
in my filter list.

There are quite a few names and email addresses in my filter list. All the
cuss words are on that list. Words and phrases like "Earn Big $$$!" and the
word "free" in any sentence with an "!"

Any message which quotes the -ENTIRE- original post and adds a line or two
at the bottom gets deleted unread.

Looking in my deleted folder I see that there was a recent thread on
"Maryland", one of the 40 states I have on my filter list so I won't be
tempted to read anything about a state I don't know anything about, and
cannot help anyone in. Not that I don't like Yankees, or that you are
boring, but even with drastic filtering I still have 500+ to go through
everyday. Before filtering it is more like 1500. I couldn't read the
information I want if I read everything I get.

That's why you might hear me complain about changing subject lines. Nothing
is worse than going through the trash and finding a wonderful essay on
'beating heat stress in tomatoes' listed under the subject "The snow is
falling in Wisconsin".

But I try not to complain about it, I've never seen it do any good to whine
about anything on any list. Better to just use filters and read with the
delete key.
