I have several 1/2 barrels planted with tomatoes.  I've planted the faster 
growing cool weather crops around them & already harvested my first crop of 
radishes & leaf lettuce.  In addition to a second crop of lettuce/radishes, 
my garden cress, mibuna, chervil, roquette, miner's lettuce, corn salad, 
komatsuna & garlic chives are all doing well in 1/2 barrels with my small 
tomato plants.  Hope this gives you some ideas.
