To improve moisture retention, my #1 recommendation is to mulch with at
least a 2-3 inch layer of good quality mulch. I use bagged organic
compost or redwood compost as it does work itself into the soil and
improves my soil texture as well. After I mulched my beds I only had to
water once a week (rather than every other day).
