About the mycorrhizal fungi and tomatoes: you don't have to grow your own
transplants to get the benefit from the fungus. I didn't grow any of my
tomatoes from seed this year, because I moved to Wisconsin in April.. Every
transplant was purchased. The key to success is to rub (with your fingers)
the mycorrhizae on the transplant roots. I shake most or all the potting
soil off to expose as many roots as possible. Putting mycorrhizae in the
planting hole is not very effective. The fungal spores have to make direct
contact with the roots. This has been my experience, and I understand that
some recent studies with grapes or roses have proven the same thing.
