Central Texas is not the place to be this year! Thanks to Doreen and her heirloom vegetable seed, I did get a tomato crop. But the 'store stuff', Hawaiian hybrids bit the dust before they could set bloom. Planted in the same bed, so conditions were exact.
ALL my comfrey died! I had a large plant I divided up into 3 small ones plus the main one. All came up from root cuttings just fine and got about 6 - 8 inches tall. One wasn't easy to access so I only watered it when it drooped a little, about every 2nd or 3rd day. The other two were practically under faucets so they received water daily. I haven't dug the root sys out of the ground to look at it, but the top growth just turned to mush on all of them.
I use comfrey in my soapmaking, and this was a real blow.

Also, I got some composting worms and it's too hot to put them in the tubs I wanted to set them out in. (Big (40 gallon) black cow lick tubs, set 3/4 in the ground, bottoms cut out.) Worms would have just dug thru till they found cool earth and not be seen again. They're currently living underneath my diningroom table in a plastic box inside a paper bag. They seem happy in the air conditioning!
Of the antique roses, Smith Parrish was just plopped in the ground and is growing fine. Dr. Ecklunk (sp?) I've planted 2 bushes and the grasshoppers think they're wonderful! One died, the other is doubtful. All are in semi-shady areas. Get relief from direct overhead sun anyhow. Smith Parrish flowers are supposed to be white with red stripes, and can be any combo of white and red. No One mentioned that they're only about the size of a quarter! Have an interesting sweet-spicy scent, very pleasing. But it goes to show, don't depend on a photo to tell you size of flowers!

Actually, this post is a test to see what and when I'll get it back in digest form on SQFT. If you get the digest, all those cc'd posts are a real nightmare to scroll thru. I didn't get a digest all week, then several with this junk showed up. Hope it's cleared up soon! (Wearing out my delete key.)
