Ben,
Although I'm now in Illinois, I gardened in tropical Gulf Coast Texas for
nearly a decade. About Aug. 1st, I set out tomato plants, and I started
seeds for cole crops such as cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli and Brussels
sprouts. The seedlings will be ready to set out in late Sept. Don't rush
the lettuce. It hates hot soil. Refrigerate your lettuce seeds for at
least two weeks. Chilling them tricks an internal mechanism within the
seeds, and they will sprout in warmer than desired soil. Don't start sowing
lettuce seeds until the end of Sept., either. And then start with
heat-resistant varieties such as Oakleaf. Sow a small patch every two weeks
for a continual supply.
Hope this helps. If you have questions about specific crops, ask! Martha
Wells, LArry Easley, Bill DeWitt or I will have some info. We all are or
were hot climate gardeners.
