i'm growing some pie pumpkins this year in my SFG on a trellis. i'm
finding however that when my female flowers have opened, there aren't any
male flowers open to pollinate, so the little fruit just wither and die.
as a result i only have one growing fruit on the vine at the moment, with
several other fruit lost to this cause. i remember reading that the squash
family will cross-pollinate like crazy, leading to funky 2nd generation
hybrids. does this mean i can pollinate my female pumpkin flowers with my
male zucchinni flowers if they're available? the only other thing i can
think of is to save pollen from the male when they ARE open in a baggie,
then pollinate with this when the female flowers open.
argh.
