Hi Valerie,
I noticed you only got one reply and from zone 4. I am in zone 9b (So.
Calif.). I have not tried rye, as other folks here have said it
doesn't do too well if the winter is dry. I tried fava beans, and they
grew like crazy, put back lots and lots of nitrogen into the soil, and
didn't require much water, but they got real big and woody and grew
straight up and were lots of trouble to turn under, so next time I
tried Austrian field peas. I really like these, and they grow like
crazy, keep the weeds down, add almost as much nitrogen as fava beans,
and they fall over into a great big pile when they are done. Other
people down here swear by clover, but I haven't tried it. HTH,
Shawn

Hello everyone,
I'm growing black-eyed peas as a cover-crop. How tall do you let them
grow before turning them into the soil? What are some of your favorite
cover crops?
Thanks in advance,
Valerie
