I had good results with potatoes this year at one plant per square foot with
those planted the old-fashioned   way (hilled up with dirt as they grew).
The same varieties planted at the same time and covered with straw as they
grew did not produce.  I believe it is too warm here to use the straw
method - it just doesn't provide enough insulation from the warm spring air.
