Brian,

I am new to gardening too.  I garden with a group of master gardeners, and
they are teaching me "everything".

I have been told you need to pick eggplant before it goes dull.  I usually
pick them when they are fairly small.   Just about the size you are talking
about, baseball  size if not just a bit bigger.   I think most veggies taste
better when they are smaller, rather than waiting for them to get too big.
