New to list
Hello Ya'll,
I'm so glad to have found the list after a web search.
Vicki here in the South. Southern born and bred.-
I have been square-footing off and on for 15 years. I
read Mel's book when my oldest (19) was about 3 and
since we've moved often with hubby's job I have left
many gardens behind. (Four to be exact.)
We just moved to this house in August.
Anyway this garden now is going to be expensive!!!. I
started my beds about 4 weeks ago. I tilled in a
truckload of well rotted sawdust and cow manure into
an existing mulched site. My mom found a man who sold
the sawdust for 10 bucks a load. I then dug deep and I
bought some cinder blocks and laid out three 4 by 6
foot beds with 18 inch walking paths. This was not the
pricey part.
Anyway to make a long story short I live in the
suburbs in a restricted neighborhood, and even though
the blocks don't go against the covenants I got some
ugly remarks from the neighbors about them not being
pleasing to the eye. My garden is in the side/back
yard just beside the driveway. My long term plan is to
have a French kitchen garden close to the house
complete with picket fence and arbor. We believe in
the pay as you go plan and my long term plan may take
5 years. As a social comment ,I think a lot of these
neighbors are used to instant gratification. As a
gardener I am patient.
Anyway to please the neighbors and also to let them
see that square foot gardening can be a pleasing way
to garden dear hubby bought my Christmas present. 145
dollars worth of beautiful slab rocks . We spent 2
days building up walls in front of the cinder blocks.
I'm scouring the seed catalogs now. I plan to plant
spinach, beets, sugar snaps, carrots, spring
onions, radishes and lots of lettuces in the spring.
I'm going to plant some creeping thyme in the holes in
the cinder blocks and let it cascade down the sides.
Any ideas for other cascading type plants??? This is
an effort to cover any last peeking cinder block.
I will plant cukes, tomatoes and squash in the summer.
Of course I'll add herbs and flowers. I use lots of
basil and Italian parsley.
My mom lives close by and has a large row garden and
we'll plant corn and okra there. Mom is a Master
Gardener and does organic as much as possible but she
still does the row method.
So good to be on the list. I don't get online too
often. This thing can be addictive!
Hope to chat later
