Re: Anybody thinking about garlic for '02?

A good garlic for you might be "Elephant". I am in New York where it
is supposed to be zone 5 but is getting more and more like zone six.
Elephant is mild in flavor and large in size. I grow it because I
hate to peel all them tiny cloves you get at most grocery stores. If
you go to a super store like Walmart I am sure you can find some for
seed. I would suggest you get extra and just plant the largest
cloves. Elephant is 2 to 3 times the size of normal garlic. Don't
let it fool you though. The top half of a clove is much milder than
the bottom half. I tried it raw and got surprised.
I had mine planted just about the time of first frost. Like most
bulbs, they do best with a period of dormancy in cold ground. Not
knowing enough about your zone I can't tell you if it is to late for
a fall planting. My first and successful crop was spring planted.
Not quite as large as the parents but not disappointing either.
Garlic also is a good plant to help keep insect pests out of your
garden as are onions also.
