Re: Winter Gardening

     Hi Kurt,
I'm zone 9b too, in Claremont, just east of you, but we've been down
in the low 30's because we're just below Mt. Baldy so we get a little
cooler sooner. I still have eggplant going strong, but I think last
night with the clear skies and cold wind may have done them in
finally. You're right about plants not growing fast though. Not enough
sunlight I guess. Carrots, parsnips, and spinach are all alive but not
growing much. Lettuce and radishes and green onions are going very
well though. Have to keep an eye on my Meyer Dwarf Lemon and Mexican
Lime trees - they don't like frost, and last year the high winds
stripped every last leaf off the poor lime tree. The lemon tree was
too short I guess and also had some protection from a brick wall. Also
lost two wood fences. Hopefully the wind will go away.
Anyway, the oregano, rosemary, parsley (especially now), and cilantro
are all either growing away merrily or coming up nicely.

That's all for this winter. Maybe try brassicas next winter - this
year the slugs got them all (boohoo).

The list got quiet last year about this time. Give it two or three months and
things will be hopping again.

Is anybody doing some winter gardening? I've got some cold hardy plants in the
ground still and they are still holding on. Temps got down to 44 last night.
That is far enough above freezing that I can still grow the cold hardy plants.
It rarely gets below freezing here for more than a few weeks so I'm trying to
go through the winter. The plants sure don't grow fast but they are still
growing. I'd like to hear from anybody who is using cold frames or row covers
to keep the heat in durring the night.
