Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Using soap solutions as insecticides is a time-honored practice which
precedes Jerry Baker. We used it over a half century ago - before TV -
and before most chemical insecticides became widely available. You
can even buy "Insecticidal Soap" formulated from potassium salts. Some
years ago when the local whitefly problem became serious the cooperative
extension service conducted experiments with over a dozen commercial
soap products and concluded Dawn liquid was the most effective in
controlling whiteflies and aphids. It is also effective on many other
insects. It works by smothering and desiccating the insects so you need
to spray it directly onto the insect. Soap is also used as a surfactant
in pesticides (both insecticides and herbicides). Initially, use at 1/8
cup soap to 1 cup water for tender vegetable plants and a little
stronger for established plants and shrubs. I am not familiar with
using soap with compost. -Olin
