>Raise Soil Temperature by Using Black and Clear Plastic
Katherine Wendt
This is funny. I thought of this, and thought, sure, but
who what would need that much help, and be willing to go to
the trouble except folks who are soooo desparate in Alaska,
etc, who already figured it out!
What do they raise, or in what time of year, to require this?
Do they offer data on gains?
My mom was born in Norfolk, and I wonder about climate and
what she saw as a child. Plus, I'm an info-monger.
PVC comes in 20' pieces, and I think for larger ares, that
1" would be less heavy any prone to crack if thin and water
resistant, as a way to create the air gap. Larger pieces
of ABS black stuff, say 2', filled with water, capped,
roll the plastic under it a few inches or a foot, would
hold it down, while be moveable. 7 1/2 lbs per gal.
Ea 6' of 2" would be a gal, OR Ea 1 1/2' of 4," plus
weight of parts. With black on the soil, and a
framework somewhat above the youngest plants,
(your raised bed framing???) you've got a coldframe!
