torts, dands, OnTopic about OT & AMENDing Soil

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

>>Eeks, apologies for the fry bread question --
forgot which list I was on and
I am WAY off topic.

>don't apologize... I want to know too!!!

*I disagree. Cyn did right. I can agree w/ Margaret also. And
also can answer the question. But to cook bread we need to now
your altitude, not your zone. It's a different List.

Had Cyn slipped it in as an aside, it likely would not have raised a
flag. Chat is tonight and this would be a good issue.

There have been allegations made that some of us have been too OT. Whether
good humor about bras and panty hose as melon supports
or wine or tortillas or bread, to open garden mail and find
soley a bread recipe and NO Garden Content, is rather more
perturbing than it being slipped in as an aside.

My mention of breads and tortilla represented, by example,
both my answer and a pet peeve I have over garden list members
and books in general. Still, a clue is better than
a poke in the eye with a sharp stick.

They always seem to say add amendments generously, or
add 'some while..." but you have to dig like a frenchman
(double-dig... a joke) to find the amounts they imply. I'm
sorry my recipes are like that. They are from experienced
folk. I now approach that on some subjects. Still, to get
an idea, I had to decode the tortilla pkg. It initially
took time to learn how.

I initially needed accurate quanity in gardening and cooking.
You would never guess the pertibations I go thru to deduce
correct fertilizer amounts for a large containerr or SqFt
when the pkg says 1/2-3/4 lb per 100 ft row. I convert
that to plant spacing etc, and per plant, average them,
convert to teaspoons tablespoons or ounces,
per SqFt or per plant.

A 25% amendment means if you buy 1 cu ft bags of compost,
it is 12x12x12 or 1728 cu inches. Or 12" wide, 1" thick,
and 12Ft long. This and the top 3" of your soil is 25%
amendment. That's 4 bags to replenish a 4Ft x 12Ft bed,
or as initial amendment in a new bed with so-so poor soil,
12 bags! For 33% amendment, (33/25) x 12 bagds, or 16 bags
for really bad soil like thick clay. You WILL <g> have a
raised bed!

Double dig. I did not the first year. But experience has
taught me the seepage and worms will make double digging
easier this year. I hit a hardpan at 12-15". Previous
owners thought this house on a 'spring!' Someone 3Ft
higher is just running off, and water does NOT penetrate this.

We need a method to handle OT. We can invent and co-subsribe
to a sister ListBot Site, and we who desire this content
subscribe to both. Some have joined Gardentalk@erGoups.com.
They have 130 people, not 300, and enjoy this chatter,
immensley. It is a running joke that I tease them about
No Garden Content, and I get teased in return. We can
subscribe to a site I made for this stuff,

Society has rules. Nudist colonies also. SqFt wants to be
sorta On Topic. I respect that. It isn't like we are
denied nudism or whatever. (An allegory.) We just need
to walk down the beach a few feet, because they were
here first, and there is plenty of beach. I like SqFt.
I like other places too.

I am willing to keep my trunks, well, my speedos actually,
mostly pulled up when here. They may see me adjusting
them as I approach, but that's all.

I'll go to the an-ot-garden for replies that can't
somehow be squarely fit here. This is just something you
gotta do when a List is 300 large. (Or so I hear... must be
ghost writers.. there is a squatter law you know, better
speak up, LOL.) Mine is clothing optional.
Just no making unfriendly fun of a guy for his, er uh,
ideas.

Temps 50F +/- 5, little sun, 69% per annum, humid.
Alluvial soil... (getting better.)
The coffee grounds are showing promise.
Harder experimentation is called for now.
