I haven't grown peppers sqft, but a few years ago (everything happened a
few years ago, forgive me)studies showed that peppers could be planted
quite closely together with beneficial results. Less sunscald on fruits,
for example. I've always planted peppers in those otherwise worthless
3-ring tomato "cages" because I let my dog roam the garden in search of
voles, and my chile and mild pepper plants are brittle. Cages prevent
unwanted breakage. Diameter of the top ring makes it necessary to separate
the plants and I do get some sunscald. I'd plant them closer, were I you.
