I
2 feet deep will require quite a bit of goodies to fill them, my raised beds
are
1 foot high and are only filled 8 inches up inside. (That way when I put on
my winter compost or summer mulch I am not over the top of the bed.

The Mel book you are already reading. You are on track already.
>4) Mel talks about compressing lots of stuff into a single square,
including >planting X in-between Y because you know X will harvest before Y
gets to big, >etc. Does anyone out there really get this intense with their
gardening? If so, >how do you keep track of this? Do you start the year
with a calendar and decide >which plants to plant up front on a week-by-week
basis? Or do you just let it >happen as it goes along?
Well some plants prefer the spring or fall, and some plants prefer the
heat of summer, so that makes it easy to determine what to start in spring.
I actually do use a calendar, that and the information in the back of Mels
book (or the seed packet...) On how early something can be planted how
long till it is ready to harvest etc. I do this now. My first year of sqft
I just planted what transplants I could from the farmers market, and tried
some things from seeds. When a plant finally gave out, I didn't have
anything ready to go that first year. As time goes by I know more and
more about how to make this work, this year I am starting all my own
seeds (i hope) and have the garden planned how to be productive till
a month or more after last frost.
Mel's biggest (and in my opinon best idea) is start small, add on a
little each year. The next year maybe you add a new raised bed or
start a compost pile, the year after that perhaps you make sturdy
trellesis, or add container gardenening. Whatever, just start small
succeed and add on. Good luck, welcome to the group. Ron Souliere
