Welcome, Lee and Patricia.  I'm also in my first year, so don't worry about 
sounding foolish.  The pros around here are used to it and quite helpful.
I found the archives a helpful place to start, as well as Mel's book.
My big acheivement so far is wintering over some corn I started too late last 
year.  It helps to be in San Diego with a mild winter, of course.  I 
cold-framed it and it grew slowly all winter.  Now that it's getting warmer, 
it's starting to bump the top of my five foot tall cold frame (basically a 
PVC frame with clear plastic around it).  AND -- I have my first ear of corn 
showing up!  I replanted the areas that didn't sprout, and interwove some 
more planting near the largest plants, so I'm hoping to keep my corn box 
going for quite a while and have fresh corn available early and late.  Then 
just for good measure, I planted a few pickeling cukes to grow under the corn.
The only real problem I ran into (up until now, with the cold frame getting 
too low) was some chloresis (sp?) that cleared up with a nice helping of 
blood meal (my Mom, a new addition to the list, caught it over her holiday 
visit.  She can not only diagnose but also spell stuff like that.)
I'm considering adding a small chinese veggie patch now for stir fries, and I 
have early starts on peppers and 'maters thriving along the south wall of the 
house up against a white wall in containers.
