I agree with Ron Souliere's previous comments about keeping plants from
getting spindly. I use the same methods and have very few problems with
spindly seedlings.
One other thing I do is to leave the lights on at least 18 hours per day.
Seedlings can actually absorb light 24 hours per day for up to six weeks
straight before the chlorophyl processing mechanim breaks down. I have
given the seedlings 24 hours of light with no problem.
My seed starter setup consists of hanging shoplight fixtures and either
cool white or warm white bulbs (whichever are on sale). The trays rest
on formica sink cutouts leftover from house construction. The formica is
screwed onto an old, rather large, fish tank stand my landlord was
throwing out.
No need to get too fancy - the seedlings don't know the difference!
