Marijke,
I don't have any idea why this works. Two years ago I was having trouble
with damping off and a friend said I was watering too much so to avoid the
problem I should water less and spray with a weak solution of chamomile tea
every few days. I sprayed right away and the mold that had started to grow
sort of evaporated. I had no trouble with damping off the rest of that
spring. Last year I used the tea from the very beginning and had no trouble
at all. So far this year I haven't had any trouble, but I've only started
parley and onions.
Last year I saw this same solution to damping off mentioned on the organic
gardening list. I dilute 1 cup of regular strength tea in four and spray a
little on the soil with a misting bottle. The rest I store in the fridge.
Sometimes I'm gone for twelve hours at a time so the newly emerging
seedlings need to be wet enough to survive until I return.
