I wouldn't hesitate to plant veggies in a used wine barrel. Everything used 
in the barrel had to be safe for human consumption.  Make sure there are 
drain holes in the bottom, and elevate the barrel by clay "feet" or boards 
or something so the drain holes aren't plugged from the bottom.  Margaret L
