Fig trees are deciduous, so lose their leaves in winter.  Water sparingly
when it's defoliated.  I don't know whether Californians regard them as
"rare" fruits, but I think the California Rare Fruit Growers have a web
site at http://www.crfg.org/fg/  Also, check your public library for home
orchards/edible landscaping/fruit growing, etc.  Margaret
