Hi group: I've only been a part of this list for a couple of days. I think this list will be a great support for my husband and I as we begin our garden. We live on a 2 1/2 acre lot in northern Arizona. The soil is sand, clay and about 5 ft deep, we hit hard blue rock, calichee (sp). I think a raised garden is the only way to have a garden. (I have killed numerous trees and flowers by just adding a little potting soil around the plant to the natural soil.) Also, well water is extremely salty. We drink only bottled water. I still need to ask the locals where to buy soil in bulk, besides Wal-Mart :) We want to grow basic vegetables and plan to have 3-4 small gardens 4' x 4' or so with walkways in between. We also need a fence or something around it all as we have 2 German Shepherd mixes who dig and jump. I'm originally from northwest Missouri and my husband is from Oklahoma, so this struggle to grow things is foreign to us. Our acreage is tumbleweeds and no grass, which is great for hubby's allergies :) Anyone else have to deal with high desert plateau gardening? Winslow, AZ is 5,000 ft. elevation and is known for its extreme winds in the spring. Temps range to daytime lows of 30 in winter to 101 in summer. My neighborhood is flat with no trees for miles. Suggestions to how to avoid getting garden blown away? Thanks for your help. I look forward to be a part of this list. Sandy Haggard, Winslow, Arizona (Where do I find Zone# ? I'm such a newbie :) )
