I am in Portland OR (Zone 8) and have about 200 square feet in raised vegetable beds on a small city lot. Last year was my first year gardening on this site and my fourth year gardening in Oregon. Up until last year, I thought all the local slug complaints were exaggeration, that is until I lost about 100 seedlings in one weekend to them. My strategies against them include copper tape around all beds, daily (weekly in winter) "slug hunts" under boards, rocks, etc, lots of hand picking off plants at night with a flashlight and use of slug bait (Cory's) on my nonvegetable garden area. I hope to avoid the use of the bait this year, I've been saving up wood ashes from our pellet stove and may also try diatomaceous earth. We bought this house in an established neighborhood which is home to quite a few gardeners, I endured quite a bit of teasing about my methods (raised beds, square foot gardening, composting, rainwater recycling). However at the end of the season (despite the nasty weather and slugs, I ended up with a good harvest), the acknowledged "best" gardener on the street called me into her yard, gave me a bunch of her garlic to plant in my yard and said "you had the best tomatoes of anyone". Ahh, vindication. Finally, a question about composting: I put used paper towels in mine, but have wondered about the following: tissues, paper or cardboard which held food, dryer lint, tobacco from cigarette butts. Anyone have advice for this compulsive composter ? ^=^=^=^=^ Death = Silence ^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^ =^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^ Which dead speak to you ? ^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^= ^=^=^= Which dead do you speak for ? ^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^=^
