I have tried raising tomatoes by using cages, stakes and tieing, and last
year with a trellis. I used large plastic poles (bought them at Home Base)
and a nylon trellis which you can also buy at hardware or garden centers. I
tied the trellis to the poles (depending on length one to three) ran a
strong cord through the top of the trellis and tied to the poles. The top
string provides support. I had great success with this method. At the end of
the year I took it down and stored it for use this year. Of course as stated
in Mel's book you need to keep the tomatoes side shoots pruned. But I was
still having blooms and picking tomatoes up until the first killing frost
which was in the middle of October here in Salt Lake.
