I've had very good results with tomato cages made of 4 foot by 7 (8?) foot
concrete reinforcing mesh rolled lengthwise into a cylinder. The result is
a tall cage about one and a half foot in diameter. I just train the tomato
vine up the cage. It seems crowded but works well, keeps a small
"footprint" and the air circulates well around the vine. Tomatoes are
partly protected from sun scald also. You can cut some of the bottom cross
pieces if you want some "spikes" to stick in the ground but I've taken to
just pushing it some into the ground. No other support usually needed
unless you have more than just a bit of wind.
