Re: SqFt Planting Spaces

For vining plants that we don't feel like trellising (pumpkin, lg.
zucchini/acorn squash) and for pole beans that we grow up a teepee instead
of in a SF trench, we dig small circles out of our lawn and plant in them.
The vines just wander on the lawn and we don't have to worry about
reserving a hole 4 x 4 plot or a 3x3 foot section out of our square foot
grid for them.

This year we are planning on growing vining plants along the edge of a rock
wall and letting the vines dangle off the edge.

It really doesn't give me "more" space, it just lets me use my space
differently as the areas where we dig mounds are not yet incorporated into
our square foot system. This year however we are turning the old mounds
into part of a square foot grid. In essence we are doubling are growing
space this year because we want to preserve more. In addition we've
dedicated part of our garden to the homeless shelter and food warehouse in
our city.
