Jeanne Grisetti <jeannegr@CSD.UWM.EDU> asked: >Does anyone know when asparagus seeds should be planted? The packet I >have says, "sow in early Spring." Does that mean before last frost? I >know it takes a year before you can harvest, but that's all I know, so >any information on spacing, etc. is also welcome! > >Also, I'm guessing it should be sown directly into the ground and not >started indoors? From seed package: Thompson & Morgan: Asparagus 'Jersey Night Improved': "Sow from January to late May. Soak the seeds for 2 hours in tepid water before sowing individually in 7.5 cm (3 in) pots of good free draining compost. Germination takes 14-21 days at 25-27°C (75-80°F). When well rooted in their pots stand them outside in a cold frame, and in late spring plant them outside..." Mines are about 30 cm (1 ft), now on the windowsill. BTW, you don't need a SQFT garden for Asparagus. That would be overkill. Sorry for increasing the bandwidth unnecessarily...
