Hi Elgin:

I would like to give you my opinion on a couple of things in your
post.  I would recommend the 4 ft width.  You want to be able to
reach all parts of the bed without walking on the soil.  Also, I
wouldn't put any barrier under the soil of the bed, even at 12
inches.  I would recommend double digging which would need a depth of
24 incehes.  It (the barrier) might affect drainage as well.  Square
foot gardening is a form of biointensive gardening so that will help
on keeping the weeds down once the plants are established.
