Starting pepper seeds

Hi folks:

There is a world of difference between the various varieties of the species
capsicum annuum as far as germination goes. If you run into some that take
a long time to germinate, like more than 2 weeks, you can give them the
saltpeter treatment next time. Basic problem is that the seedcoat needs to
be broken down before the seed can push out the root.
Dissolve one teaspoon of saltpeter, obtainable at any drugstore or bigger
grocery store, into a quart of water. Soak for a while, say 8 hours max,
and then plant. I have read of people who subsequently water with this
soaking solution but I have had bad luck with that.
I would like to speak up for those tomato transplants which are not
immediately watered. There little roots are already in pain from the move
and losing turgor. I think not watering sounds like cruel punishment to me.

Ed, in lower MI - 3+inches of rain in one week. Enough already.
