Re: Okra spacing & tomato rotation

Old John,
I would guess that the commerical fields fumigate their soils between crops
with highly toxic chemicals to destroy all soil pathogens--including the
good ones. They then add lots of synthetic fertilizers to make up for the
lack of good soil biology. It works well for mass productions, and the
tomatoes taste like it. We garden, I hope, for the taste and quality. So,
I'd urge you to continue doing what your parents taught--rotation--to let
crop-specific insects and diseases die out in the soil before another round
is planted. Or, you can solarize soil as we do here in the south. Or, you
can fumigate the soil and forget about compost and other good stuff and pump
your plants full of synthetic fertilizers.
Doreen Howard,
who lately has been on an organic rant :-)
