For snap peas, I plant Sugar Ann for an early crop and Sugar Snap for my
main crop. Both are sweet and heavy bearing. Sugar Ann has vines about 3
to 4 feet. Sugar Snap vines have grown up and over my 8 foot trellis
consistently. I plant my peas as soon as I can get out into the garden and
work the soil (which for me is about the second week of April). Young peas
are cold hardy, the mature plants are less so. While there are varieties
which are not as viney, I have not had any experience with them.
Another observation, the pea production and flavor tend to fade as the
summer heat hits, so plan on the early crop for the longest production and
the sweetest peas.
