>I'm new to Zone 4 (or maybe 5) and am wondering if there's any local
source for basic info like last/first frost dates, etc.
*Ortho. We have no Ag Agent as helpful as you.
I can offer LaCross, Green Bay, or Milwaukee.
*Ooooo... This is tough, closer to Green Bay, but almost
inland, tho' by a lake. I'd bet winds would be from the
SW by W sometimes (esp winter) and East by SE others.
----------First frost---Last frost
Green Bay----10-13---------5-6----
Milwaukee----10-25---------4-20---
La Cross-----10-8----------5-1----
Ave,Weighted-10-11---------5-10--- This is my "safe" guess.
>Until I get as organized as Bill with Excel (what an inspirational/alarming
idea...I love it!), I'm going
to need some help. Is this the kind of thing the
local extension service would have?
Mary
Appleton, WI
Zone 4/5
*This takes time. It didn't happen, it evolved.
The first year, with no one to help, is the worst.
You at least have some help here. I used to do this
with a pencil as a kid. Then color pencils happened.
Then computers. Excel just made it a joy.
Filemaker which Katherine uses will link to Excel
or Access now. It links to the web too.
It's no longer just Mac, and if RSA (a security firm)
uses it, I can feel somewhat safe. I wrote them as
I evaluated them as the kind of Filemaker Apps user I
wanted felt would have some features I wanted in a
Garden DB if I stepped outside of Excel and Access
into Filemaker.
Understand, I have a history in Silicon Valley.
I probably watered the plants where Filemaker is
now, before there was a Patrick henry Drive.
Filemaker has improved vastly. While still not
Access, for many it will be sufficient and easier.
For instance, sharing info from the DB across the web
is easier. AI (Artificial Intelligence) DataMining
may not be. But few will use that, which is a shame,
as it's really effective. Excel was the favorite there.
But Access is up there too, now. I have no info yet
on Filemaker for these advanced compatibility issues.
Until YOU get your Excel or whatever UP...
You are right NOW losing valuable daily data, to which
to refer Next year!!! So draw up a crummy sheet.
Put it on the fridge, and GO! I used to use a dry
erasable miniature 10-12 x 14-16 or so one. It
was a pain to bring uop Excel every day for what
started out to be a few numbers. So I entered it
weekly, or so.
Get your rain gauge, $7, a tapered one is better than
straight. I made a float for mine. It's on the
fence outside the kitchen window. I don't empty
it every day, hel_, it might be raining! Excel
subtracts from the number from the day before.
Can't set up the formula? Call me. Once you try
it once, it's easy. First time w/o a teacher
or experience isn't much fun unless you're a natural.
Get your min-max thermometer.$8. Record. Record what
the weatherman or paper says too. You'll soon learn,
whatever he says, add/subtract "4" on cloudy days,
add "2" on sunny days, and add 1/2" for whatever
rain he predicts. Last, a barometer. KMart or
Walgreens Drugstore. Set of Baro, Therm (house)
and Humidity for $20.
This is mainly for hour to hour, morning to evening,
day to day prediction. If you get fussy, you'll
spot it's patter meshed with the temp pattern,
meshed with a rain pattern, and predict 3-5 days
ahead, better than the weatherman... but usually
you won't need to... Just a few weekends you'll
want to know in advance. But 'she' enjoys being
able to ask me what the weather will be, so as to
choose clothes for the next day better. Now she's
even learning to watch the birds...! Got a crickett?
Or for $299-599 I can tell you abou a Davis Company.
It automatically inputs some numbers to your computer.
The wind speed device is cool. Useful, or not.
They don't do it all...but I can't discuss that, yet.
Bill
