RE: Squash

Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html

Hi Cindy,

Welcome to the list. I've had problems the last couple of years with the
squash vine borers ruining my crops. I asked the list the same question last
year and they gave me some great suggestions. Here are a few, first you can
try succession planting. Plant some seeds 2 weeks or so apart and then if
the borer gets the first plants you can just replace them with the second
set. Also someone suggested wrapping the main vine with old stockings so
that the borer couldn't enter your plant. Someone else said to try burying
the main vine as it grew, this would serve the same purpose as the
stockings. You can also check the plants continuously for eggs and squish
them immediately. You can also try light weight row covers and just remove
them for pollination.
I tried covering the vines with dirt last year and they still got to my
plants. It was probably my fault because I wasn't very thorough in covering
them. This year I am going to try the stockings. Keep us posted as to what
method you use and good luck.

Hello, my name is Cindy and I am new to the list. I live on
the Gulf Coast
which is nice because we have two growing seasons-spring and
fall. Anyway, I
wanted to know if there is an alternative to getting rid of
the vine boring
bugs that destroy my squash and zucchinis other than
chemicals. I would
rather not use chemicals than use them. Thanks.
		Cindy
