*There's More:

Go to
http://www.egroups.com/group/mycology/169.html?

and reads gypsom.
This is good for clay.
It softens soil, enhances nutrient uptake,
w/o adjusting nutrient OR pH.
Also called Calcium Sulfate (Not Carbonate.)

It does more, but to find out what...
(Good for bluberries too it seems... to aid drainage)

Bad news, I had to gp to an actual nursery to get it.
Accept no substitutes! Good news, $8 a bag.
Bad news, the bag is 40 lbs.
Good news, handle by hand, washes out w/o soap.

I have clay. THIS goes in everything but Pear Tree Holes,
which Don't mind heavy soil. Bad news, Asian Pears do well here.
Good news, They ain't bad!
;>)

I want a copy when you get done sorting the Word file,
or I'll take it all raw. Remember, THIS was only to Plant it.

I think, by my calcs, 1 Square (1x1) , well, depending
what you read, and how you interperet it, needs to
be 150% larger, 225% larger, or even much more,
because the roots spread...

I saw 4 per square... I think we should pretend it
was a typo, or he/she meant, 4 per 4x4,
which would be good, but not intensive.

I'm going to say if 1x1 is OK for the roots, It likely
ain't fer the ferny foilage. The ones inboard, will
likely be sun starved.

Doesn't Sq Ft make any allowance for this, somehow?
18x18 would be good, even then, 'they,' want a row
configuration. I heard confirmation that someone
who tried rows but more tightly spaced than 'those'
books call for, considered themselves lucky to gain
access to the inner sanctum. You do these 2x2.
4 sqs each, or in a row. It would be a LOOONNGG
3 yr experiment, to try 16 in a 4x4, and 4 in a 4x4.
But I think you'd discover when push comes to shove,
in a heavy soil, asparagus got no shove, and can't
push to the side enuf for roots nor sun if 1x1.

Remember if You use hay, it's N is 3, (see same message
as per above) but hay and clay makes adobe, so compost
it if ypou have time, (you don''t) or put it in a
garbage can, get the eletric hedge clippers, and
shorten it to 1-2", andd amend w/ about 50%
manure (well composted.) For a 16sq (4x4) that's 8 each, 1 cu ft bags!!!
(Good news, $8 at Home Depot.)
:>)
Hope you planned on a raised bed,
cause this is a pile of shi_!
Bill
