In our version of zone 9, raspberries will not fruit because they need
more winter chill than we have. As I recall, they need a certain number
of hours below 45 deg F. They will grow but the canes (or is it briers)
are pretty wimpy. It is also too warm for boysenberries. But some
types of blackberries will fruit in our zone 9 and are not as invasive
as the wild ones in the Midwest. The thornless blackberrries which were
touted a few years ago seemed to have a lot of promise didn't work out
well. -Olin
