Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Hello group;
I am one of the 'new kids on the block' here at sqft. I joined this group
a while back
(a year or so) and unsubbed as my work just seemed to get in the way of
computing!<G>
I live in Houston, TX, but grew up in Southeast Michigan, about 25 miles
north of Detroit.
I have been an organic gardener most all of my life, I suppose. I was
raised that way. My father was raised that way. I was a 'back to the
lander', or modern homesteader for about the last 10 years that I lived in
Mich., back in the 70's.
I started doing square foot gardening when one day while watching TV, I
stumbled across Mel's show, probably on a PBS station. Before that I was a
confirmed single row planter (except for peas). I was a
devotee of the organic gurus at Rodale, consuming all the literature that
Ruth Stout and several others were writing. It simply amazed me that folks
could actually get the immense amounts of crops by wide row and later
square foot gardening offered.
In the not so recent past (abt 1975) I started with the sqft method. Let me
be perfectly candid about this. I started a couple of beds to prove that it
was not feasible to raise enough food in such a small space to put a dent
in the food budget. Man, was I wrong! It amazed me how much food I raised
in those early beds.
Since moving to Texas in about 1980, I have not raised much of a garden.
Seems as though trying to make a buck and raising a family took precedence
over a garden. At the moment I live in an apt with a small patio that is
fenced in. I am going to try a variation of sqft...container gardening of
some tomatoes and a few simple veggies. My bride of eight years and I are
thinking about moving out of the city to a nice burg named Brenham, about
half way between Houston and Austin, TX. I believe it is in zone 8,
possibly in northern zone 9. We plan to get at least a couple of acres and
start to produce more of our own food. I'm going to try to grow some
mushrooms this year (indoors with a kit). It is the rebirth of my gardening
experience! Glad that Bill, OOWON, put the url for this group in one of his
messages at his mushroom list. Thanks Bill!
So far, what I have read here in the last week or so (other than the fancy
slingshot episode <G>),has given me renewed enthusiasm. Thank you to the
group. I will mostly lurk, but there may be one or two things that I can
help on once in a while. I am sure that there are several things that will
help me out, also.

If at first you don't succeed, maybe you shouldn't try sky-diving!
