SQ>In my experience there is no vegetable that trives more in the shade but SQ>some may tolerate it better than others. Growing things need light, and SQ>there is no substitute for the sun. Reduced light gives reduced yields. living in Florida; we find many vegetables for which our summer sun is too intense; in fact, there are only a few crops which will grow then: sweet potatoes and southern peas, and even they have a hard time surviving the insect population which is rampant. Our cole and root crops will only grow during the shorter days of winter; our potatoes and english peas must go in January and we pray for no frost...lettuce thrives in the winter and will only grow in the shade during the spring. Florida creates many "problems" for the organic gardener, but it is a small price to pay for year round gardening! the least of which is having to garden in the shade part of the time... cindi, NE Florida zone 9
