Don,
Your area of the country experienced rotten summer
weather like many other regions. 1996 is the worst year for tomatoes
nationwide, it seems. I interviewed tomato experts across the country for
an article I wrote in Feb. issue of The Gardener's Comapion Newsletter,
titled "Can the Right Tomato Fool Mother Nature." All the experts said that
genetics is what determines whether or not a tomato variety will make a crop
when the weather doesn't cooperate--as I suspect yours didn't! They say to
plant adapted and smaller varieties--that's
why your Sweet 100's made a crop. Cherrys will always do something no
matter the weather. Here are the experts' variety picks for your region of
the country.
Brandywine
Mortgage Lifter
Wisconsin 55
Amish Paste
Nepal
Stump of the World
Gardener's Delight (a cherry)
Hope this is of some help.
