hot weather seed starting

Down here in Jacksonville Florida, we have to deal with high temps and
humidity.  We also have very severe thunderstorms that can destroy young
seedlings.  Carrots are a major problem, so I start my seeds in the ground,
and lay a piece of cardboard over them the first few days until they sprout.
Then I shade the young plants from the sun, filtering through enough for them
to grow.
