Mary,
I don't plant anything as a companion to strawberries. Here in the hot,
humid south, we raise strawberries as annuals. They are planted in fall,
mid-November here, and allowed to fruit until June. By that time, they have
produced most of the berries they will in one season and are busy putting
out runners. There is too much disease here to try and carry over runners.
So plants get pulled and composted. Next fall, new plants go in. I plant
day-neutral varieties so they fruit over a long period. I have Chandler and
Sweet Charley in the garden this year.
On average, each plant in one season will produce 1 pint of berries. From my
100 plants, I expect 100 pints. You can, too. Since these berries are in
blocks that ring my veggies bed, I guess you could consider all the veggies
as companions!! Herbs and marigolds also do very well in the cinder block
holes. I have lots of them, too.
As far as carrying the blocks (which weigh nearly 40 lbs apiece), I nearly
died doing it!!! But, the happy result was that I built new muscles and lost
45 pounds last gardening season!! Strong husbands are helpful, too! Mine
did his share of lifting.
Doreen
