Tamara,
I have saved seed from a couple of different beans, letuce, radishes and sun
flowers. So I am not an expert here but I have done it. You can avoid cross
pollination by these three methods. (I am taking this from a book I read.)
1) Distance. Each plant that is flowering should be 150feet-1/4mile apart.
This is not possible with most square foot gardens.
2) Time. Each plant should flower at a different time than any other plant
that might cross with it. Stagger your plantings to get this result.
3) Protection. The is the most labor intensive methid but the only way that
ensures no cross pollination. Cover the female flowers with a breathable
bag. When they flower, take a male flower and rub it witht eh female flower
then cover it again with the bad. You end up isolating the flower from any
outside polinators.
Hope this helps.
