Do I need to prune my Raspberries? I had a wonderful first year crop

My reply:

Yes you do prune raspberries but he method is somewhat dependant on the
type. If you are talking about red or yellow summer bearers you want to
prune out the canes that fruited right after they fruit. Rasberries
generally fruit on wood grown the seaason before(this is a minor lie but
true enough for most purposes). In addition once the plants go dormant
you wan tto thin out the row a bit, leaving around 2-4 canes per foot.
Also you might want to tip the canes which means remove the spindly
growth at the top of the canes (usually the top 4-6 inches)

If you have Fall bearers or two-crop varieties you need to determine if
you are going for two crops or not. My recommendation is to go for one
fall crop as it simplifies life and makes it real easy. To do this
simply prune all the canes to the ground in the winter. It is that
simple. If you wonder why you would not go for two crops the reasonm is
simple. The fruit will be at the base of the cane..it is a pain to find
and normally ripens in the shade so the taste isn't there...also it tends
to reduce your fall crop some, lastly it just gives another place for
bugs and disease to linger.
