I like Doreen's idea of blocks. I have been wanting to convert our row
gardens at school to sqft but with cutting, nailing and setting up with 7th
graders I was not sure. But with block we can put them all kinds of ways,
they have lots of space to plant and let them try to tear them apart. We
will be ordering enough for 14 gardens and will begin in the next few weeks.
I shall keep you posted. They are only .95 cents here. >>
I'm planning on using concrete blocks here too. It will take 14 blocks per
bed. I am going to dig out the soil 4" and "recess" or sink the block 4" into
the ground and then fill with soil mixture to top level of block. I will then
have my beds raised 4" above the ground level. But, I will have 8" of good
soil in each garden. This will help me some because it gets so hot here that
sometimes it seems like you can't water a raised bed enough!! But, this is
the layout for anyone who's interested:

The * represent the holes in the blocks and the v^<> represent the ends of
each block. Sorry but it's the best I could do with a keyboard.
TOP: 3 BLOCKS
LEFT 4 BLOCKS RIGHT 4 BLOCKS
BOTTOM 3 BLOCKS
The concrete blocks are 16" long and 8" high and 8" wide. So this
arrangement works out perfectly without having to cut any blocks. Also, if
you want to, you can place two gardens side by side and turn the blocks with
the flat side up. This will give you 16" of pathway between the two gardens.
I think I'm going to like the holes in each block because I'm going to plant
them with marigolds, garlic and green onions. No sense in wasting space!!
