Square Foot Gardening List - http://www.flinet.com/~gallus/sqft.html
Just to chime in:
I used cinder blocks as well for building my four-block garden
this fall. They're especially useful for me, as my garden sits
on a hill behind my house. Thus, I had to build retaining walls
to keep all my dirt in. I estimate that I moved about 5 yards of
dirt, compost, etc in building this thing, not to mention the
bloody cinder blocks!
Great thing about them is they don't look bad, are strong, and last
a loooong time. Plus, the bit previously mentioned about planting
in the holes.
I'd also point out that one needn't use the 8x8x16 blocks; there
also exist 4x8x16 blocks in both solid and hollowed-out forms. The
solid ones look better, too.
