My First Square Foot Garden

Hello All,

This is going to be my first try at square foot gardening.   I have the
book and have read it I don't know how many times and I learn something
new each time.  I have questions for you all.  First, has anyone used a
brand of seed called "American Seed" (said to have started in 1897)??
Are they good quality??  Next, I need spacing information of these
vegetables:
1. Turnips
2. Okra
3. Should I plant the pumpkin and watermelon in the same block with the
sweet corn??
4. Sunflowers
5. Tomatillos
6. Large Bottle Gourds for bird houses
7. Luffa Gourds
8. Rhubarb
9. Potatoes
10. Sweet Potatoes
11. Leeks
12. Scallions
13. Head Lettuce
14. Radicchio
15. Arugula
16. Garlic
17. Shallot
18. Horseradish
19. Kohlrabi
20. Brussels Sprouts
21. Asparagus
22. Artichokes
23. Celery
24. Strawberries
25. Pak Choi
26. Chinese Cabbage
27. Collards
28. Jerusalem Artichoke
29. Kale
30. Parsnips
31. Rutabaga

Most of these I think are common sense, but better to ask then kill a
plant.

I am looking for a guide to companion planting and also which plants not
to plant near each other.

Also I hear that certain colors promote groth in different plants, red
for tomatoes.  I would like to know more about this, does anyone have
this information, or know where to get it????

I am in Las Cruces, New Mexico and think I am a zone 8, but I see others
say they are an 8b or such.  What does the b mean??  How do I find out
if I am an 8 something??  Thank in advance for all your help, Debbie
